DRUM- Desis Rising Up & Moving is a multi-generational, membership based organization of over 1,800 low-wage South Asian immigrant workers, youth, and families organizing for social and economic justice in New York City. DRUM organizes low-income, largely Muslim, undocumented South Asian immigrant families and youth through base-building and membership services, leadership development, campaigns for policy change, and movement building. DRUM’s four programs are: (1) the Racial & Immigrant Justice Program, (2) YouthPower!, (3) the South Asian Workers Center and (4) the Global Justice Program. DRUM’s internal structure ensures low-income people impacted by the issues lead campaigns and run the organization. We seek dynamic and committed staff to grow a successful organization.
JOB DESCRIPTION
GRANT WRITER & RESEARCHER
PART-TIME (20 hrs/wk)
Start Date: Immediate
Responsibilities:
- Research new and prospective foundation sources
- Promote new funder relationships and meetings for key staff
- Submit new LOI’s and proposals every month
- Meet outcomes to successfully increase our new funding sources by 10% at the end of every 6 months
- Research community data and write new proposal language in conjunction with the Executive Director
- Coordinate & reminders to staff in maintaining Grants Calendar for deadlines, reports, and research tasks
- Support staff in submitting renewal applications and reports for existing funders
- Attend at least membership meeting and/or event each month
- Provide some training to staff on grant writing
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of prior successful grant-writing experience in a similar non-profit setting
- Must be quite familiar with South Asian immigrant communities and issues
- Demonstrated ability to produce successful fundraising outcomes and meet fast-paced timelines
- Self-directed, able to juggle multiple tasks and roles at a small yet dynamic and growing non-profit organization
- Commitment and passion to social justice issues
- Demonstrated knowledge on immigrant and worker rights issues
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work individually and as part of a team
- Excellent and demonstrated oral and written communications skill
Compensation:
Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
No benefits package as this is a part-time position. However, there is a strong likelihood of becoming a full-time position, depending on successful fundraising outcomes. Position starts as soon as possible.
RESEARCH INTERNS
GLOBAL SOUTH ASIAN MIGRANT WORKERS ALLIANCE
PART-TIME (10-15 HRS/WK)
START DATE: MAY OR JUNE
The Global South Asian Migrant Workers Alliance is a new program of DRUM in partnership with migrant groups internationally. GSAMWA seeks to organize an international alliance of South Asian migrant workers with other migrant and workers coalitions to win human rights, justice, and migrant leadership in international policy advocacy.
Responsibilities:
- Research issues related to the migration of undocumented South Asian migrant workers internationally, including statistics, data sources, trends, resources
- Research and map migrant groups, networks, and campaigns internationally to build the alliance
- Provide logistical support to the Executive Director to launch the alliance, including sending emails, calling partners, compiling materials, setting up international conference calls, taking notes, and doing follow up work with partners
- Reports to the Executive Director through weekly submitted work reports and meetings
- Attend meetings related to global migrant rights work & assist in logistics
- Attend DRUM events related to immigrant rights and help with logistics
Qualifications:
- Experience in social science research
- Experience in social justice or human rights work
- Knowledge of global migration and human rights preferable
- Commitment to racial justice, immigrant rights, women’s rights, workers’ rights, and lesbian/gay/bisexual/
transgender rights - Familiar with South Asian immigrant communities and issues
- Strong computer, communications, social media, and technology skills
Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship position. We seek interns who seek to fulfill graduate school credits and/or can secure their own funding and will assist in submitting materials in support.
